A Plan For Personal Development
Personal development means different things to different people. For some, it means developing a meaningful career. For others, learning how to have meaningful relationships. The fact is, anything that will enrich your life, bring you happiness, fulfillment and a sense of peace in your life which could be beneficial to your personal development. A good approach to develop your personal life in meaningful ways, would be to start with a personal development plan. Below, you will find some good advice about creating the best plan for you.
Make a List
The first thing to do is make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Your strengths can be things like personal communication, good work ethics or a love for people. Weaknesses are thing such as too little time for family, too much focus on yourself, or not staying fit and healthy. Be honest with yourself, and identify areas where you need growth, and areas that you can use to achieve that growth.
Next, make a list of goals that you would like to achieve. You can use your strengths and weaknesses as a guide to help you identify goals that will benefit your life, and others around you. Maybe you could utilize your love of others in a volunteer position at a local hospital, or nursing home. Or, you can turn a weakness, like focusing too much on your own life, into helping people in need. Try visiting a homeless shelter, or shelter for abused women and children. Find out what their needs are, and see how you can help. Many times, these people need simple things, such as grooming supplies, notebooks and writing utensils, or a blanket and new socks. Helping others will give you a real sense of meaning and self-worth.
Make Things Happen
Now that you have an idea of what your goals are, and how you can accomplish them, set aside time, and make things happen. You can plan alone, or get others on the bandwagon, and form a group of people who can help you to make a bigger difference. Find an area where your group can pick up trash, or maintain landscaping, such as a church or retirement home. Make regular visits to shut-ins, and bring meals, or help with small tasks, such as housework, home repairs, or just keeping someone company. The possibilities are endless, and many can change the lives of someone who needs a change.
Once you formulate your personal development plan, try not to stop your personal growth, but instead, move on to other personal goals you can achieve. There is no end to personal development, and each goal you achieve will add meaning and purpose to your life… like the following… learn about Springboarding and the Step Back technique.
The Step Back Technique and Springboarding
In the previous Posts we’ve looked at how you can potentially achieve incredible things by changing your approach and by looking at which elements are most important for you. We’ve seen, among other things, how you can achieve practically any career goal just by using the right strategy to get there.

Here’s one strategy then that can work for almost anyone, regardless of their goals.
It’s called ‘springboarding’.
What springboarding means, is that you’re creating success in one area that you can use to create success in another.
So let’s say that you want to be that rock star but you aren’t sure of your ability to get there using conventional means. What could you do instead?
Well how about creating a website that is highly successful on the topic of rock? Once you get enough people reading the site you’ll have a huge audience that you can get direct exposure to. Now all you need to do is to start featuring your own music on the blog and there you have it – a great way to get people to listen to your music.
Likewise, how might you go about achieving what Stallone achieved today? One option could be to create a popular YouTube channel showing yourself acting. Get enough follows and use high enough production values and eventually someone will come knocking with an opportunity.
Another option of course is just to get rich. If you want to make a music video, then all you need to do is to become successful and wealthy in any other area and then you can use the money and the connections from that success to fund your pet project.
Is it vein?
Is it a good investment?
But it makes you happy.
It’s what you want. It’s how you’re going to self-actualize. What could possibly be a better way to spend your money?
Let me give you some other ideas on how to be your greatest version. It is about meditation, the Step Back Technique, how to Fly and about being more present in your daily life.
Becoming More Present : There is Meditation in Everything You Do
There is no ‘end goal’ in meditation but one vague aim is to get good enough at meditating that you can eventually clear your mind or detach from your thoughts at will.
This way, you can then prevent yourself from being distracted by unwanted thoughts whenever you want to be.
I like to call this ‘bubble time’.
It is the name for the small ‘segments’ of time I give myself throughout the day when I can be completely relaxed.
Imagine that you have a very stressful day and you’ve been working hard through a massive to-do list. You need to make lots of calls, manage your work team and just generally deal with a lot of fires. Plus you have a date tonight with someone that you think will be awkward and you have pressing, on-going money concerns. Sound familiar?
Anyway, you’re on the bus going from one meeting to the next and in that time there is no benefit to being stressed. In other words, you can carry on worrying about all those things you have to do if you want to… but it’s not going to do you any good. What would be far preferable, would be if you use this short amount of time as a break in order to recuperate.
Now if you’ve never practiced meditation, you’re going to struggle to do that.
But if you haven’t? Then you can put yourself in a meditative state and become indifferent to that stress. You can sit back and just clear your mind. Now, when you arrive at your meeting, you’re going to be much more recharged and energized because your brain has had the opportunity to get some rest. The result is that you’ll feel much better and you’ll work much more efficiently as well.
If you get really good at this, then you can eventually start to employ ‘moving meditation’ as in Tai Chi. Except now, you’re going to be in a meditative and relaxed, focussed state at the same time as walking, talking and doing other things. You’ll be impervious to stress because you’ve learned to control your mind and control your emotions.
Because you aren’t giving your concerns the emotional weight that you may have done in the past, your brain isn’t activating the ‘salience network’ that it uses to respond to threats and you’re able to just carry on going about your business in a completely calm and efficient manner!
Being More Present
Meditation is one way to stop worrying about all those little nagging concerns and doubts. Another way though is just to become more present and more in the moment.
How can you do this? One method is to start focussing on your body and on your senses a little more.
The fact of the matter is that most of us are so in our own heads that we barely notice half of what’s going on around us. We walk in a dream state worrying about work, or about our relationships and we hardly take the time to stop and smell the roses – literally or metaphorically.
Try this right now.
Turn off any music that you’re listening too and instead just start to notice the sounds around you. Really listen! What can you hear? Perhaps the hum of traffic outside? Maybe the murmur of conversation in the room? Maybe you can hear next door?
Or perhaps you’re outside? Maybe you can hear the sound of birds?
Likewise, you can probably smell a whole load of things you hadn’t noticed. And if you take the moment to feel your own body, then you can probably notice the sensation of the seat pushing into your legs and into your buttocks. Maybe you can feel the blood filling your face and making you feel hot. Or perhaps there’s a cool wind blow against you. What direction is it heading?
Likewise, listen to the sounds of your own breathing and feel your abdomen expand and shrink as you do.
Once you do this, you’ll find that you stop worrying what’s going on around you and that you start to appreciate your environment a little more. There’s so much that you normally miss!
You can try doing this on walks too. Go for a walk with no music, no phone and nothing else and try just being present and noticing the world around you. It’s a calming and invigorating experience at the same time!
Being More Present in Conversation
Practicing this is important because as with practicing meditation, it will eventually become something that you can just engage at will. Now you can choose when you want to start listening better to what people are saying to you and when you want to really focus on the day out you’re having with your children.
Again, you can leave your work concerns at home.
And try focussing on the sensations of your body more the next time you’re being intimate with a sexual partner. Don’t worry about your technique, what you’re going to do next, whether they like you… instead, really focus on how the touch of their hand feels on your body. You’ll find that you instinctively know what to do next and that you start to be much more passionate and responsive. You’ll become a better lover, simply by getting out of your own head. And you’ll feel it far more forcefully.
This is true for everything else as well. Next time you have a bath, take a moment to really appreciate the warmth and the softness of the water against your skin. Indulge yourself in the smell!
The next time you eat cereal in the morning, remind yourself how much you enjoy that cereal and how happy you are to not be going to work.
This is what so many of us don’t do. So many of us are constantly in a dream state and worrying about other things that we actually miss what’s going on around us.
Being stressed and having no control over your mind is doubly problematic – because not only does it make us unhappy directly but it also distracts us from the things going on around us all the time that could be making us happier.
Oh and what this does for our relationships is also fantastic. Right now, being distracted by work could well be destroying your relationship with your family and friends.
Creating a Muse
If money is very often the enabler that you need to start being happier in your life, then the new strategy might become to quickly increase your income to get to where you need to be. This might sound a lot easier said than done but actually there are once again techniques you can use to make things a little easier.
Tim Ferriss for instance describes something called a ‘muse’. This is basically any quick and dirty little business that he can use to start generating passive income. Remember what we said about your main salary not needing to define your wealth?
The easiest muse is often to sell an affiliate product online. This means advertising an eBook or something similar and getting paid commission (up to 75% in some cases). We won’t go into how this works in depth here but a quick search on Google will show you that there are plenty of resources that will help you out.
There are other ways to quickly increase your wealth without getting promoted to CEO as well. For instance, how about looking into working on day each weekend in a small job? It’s not terribly fun but if it’s to fund a dream then it might well be worth it!
Alternatively, you could rent out a room on AirBnB, or you could even let students stay in your property – you can get paid a good amount for this!
In other words, it’s key to recognize once again that your salary is not the only source of income. You can even make a lot of money just by saving better and forgoing some of your current expenses.
Do you drink a coffee on the way into work? That can cost as much as $3-$4 in some cases. SO that’s now $15 a week or $60 a month. You could be $60 a month better off just by kicking that caffeine habit!
Again, this is all about sitting down and recognizing what your priorities are in life. You’re probably doing a whole lot right now just because you’ve always done it. It’s time to change that and to start aiming towards the goals that will actually make you happiest.
The Step Back Technique
The step back technique is a technique that involves thinking about what you want to get from life if you had all the possible resources and success in the world. If even the laws of physics were yours to bend, what would you accomplish?
Nothing is off limits here. Maybe you’d like to be a superhero? Maybe you want to save the world and cure the hungry? Maybe you want to be the next Bill Gates.
Write this down and then apply the ‘step back technique’. That means asking yourself what the closest thing you can possibly accomplish is.
You’ll be surprised at just what you can manage…
You Can Fly!
The title of this blog is step into your greatness. Fly like an eagle.
Right at the start i pointed out that this is a rather lofty aim. Can you really step into your greatness? Is it possible to Fly?
Well the answer is yes: with caveats. At this point, we’ve discussed enough strategies and techniques that you can now understand why this is the case.
The first thing to do is to look at the reasons why you want to be the greatest version of yourself and what it is about thriving that appeals to you.
Is it the speed? Because in that case, you could drive fast cars.
Is it the actual physical feeling of flying itself? Is it the ability to soar through the clouds? Because in that case you could become an airline pilot, or you could learn to fly a microlight.
But what if you want to really fly. Really fly without any machinery.
Man, you’re going to make this difficult aren’t you?
Well in that case, you could use the step-back technique. What’s the closest you can possibly come to flying like Iron Man?
There’s always zero gravity. So there’s that…
Or you could become Iron Man. Iron Man is the most realistic superhero who can fly, we can probably agree.
Still completely impossible. But more realistic.
So step back again. What’s the closest you could come to creating a real-life Iron Man suit?
Well, a few people have asked themselves that very question.
There’s actually a guy who built himself a ‘real-life Iron Man suit’ that works using a rocket attached to his back. It can’t take off from the floor but if he’s dropped out of a plane, the combination of the wings and the rocket are enough to allow him to fly/glide through the air until the fuel runs out. Woooah.
And there’s another guy who invented something similar. This one allowed him to fly with his hands and feet using thrusters – just like Iron Man.
How? Simple: it only works over water. And instead of shooting out lasers (or repulsors for the real Iron Man fans out there) this suit worked by shooting out more water.
In other words, the device takes water from a hose that’s submerged into a river or lake, and then it blasts it out powerfully from the hands and feet. It’s called the Jet Lev.
Don’t believe me? Look it up on YouTube! And if you want to use it you can – there are experience days that let you fly using the Jet Lev!
So you can’t be Superman but you can come surprisingly close if you’re willing to change your strategy and focus on what it is you really want.
This also applies to other aspects of your life such as your health. If you have a chronic illness then the sad reality is that you might never become an athlete.
But apply the step-back technique and you may realize that you can become a Paralympic athlete. Or perhaps that you can get into the best shape possible and do lots of research and become an inspiration to others who are in the same position.
So you may not always be able to become or do anything. But what you can do is to make steps towards any dream. And as soon as you start taking those steps, you’ll find that this is what gives you that sense of purpose, of satisfaction and of actualization.
